I forgot to mention this yesterday and I don't want to fill your email box up, so I'm hoping you check the website if you plan on coming to office hours today. I will be holding them in my office in the English Annex instead of at the Writing Center in Foley.
Whoa! It's been a crazy few days. Sorry for the lack of communication, although I'm sure all of you were glad to have a day to catch up on work/get a start on Thanksgiving relaxation. Since we missed Wednesday and our schedule was already tight, we need to figure out how to proceed from here. Moving the forums isn't a bit deal: in case you didn't read the email, Forum Groups four will present today and we will meet for class on Monday, November 23. These changes are marked in red on the calendar under "Semester Overview." This means we need to deal with conferences. If you jump over to the conference sign up sheet, you will see a bunch of time/name combinations in red texts. Those conference times fall during class time and need to be rescheduled as soon as possible; I've added extra times to accommodate. If you don't see a spot that will work for you, email me, again, as soon as possible, and we'll work something out. If you have not yet signed up for a conference, well, sheesh! This is your last reminder, and I'll add to it this reminder of the text at the top of the conference sign up sheet: "If you don’t see a time here that works for you, email me! Please do so by Wednesday, November 18, because once we get into conferences, I will not be able to add conference times." From time to time I will post an announcement regarding something worthwhile that I believe might enhance your understanding of the issues we will talk about in class. This is one such announcement. We will be focusing on issues of power and education this semester and later on, when you are working on your second "unessay," you might wish to take a historical look at education and those groups who have been denied equal education rights. Although Selma is about voting rights, I think it will encourage you to think critically about the issues of race and power still relevant today. Attending this will contribute rich material for your writing, and you'll have some great research under your belt before we even start officially researching! Here we go! For many of you, this is your first semester at Gonzaga. Pretty dang exciting. And I'm so glad to be a part of it. I've been tweaking the class plan a little bit and can't wait to meet you all and get started tomorrow. Every week I will post the weekly calendar, complete with homework and due dates, right to this class blog. If you ever feel the need, you can see past weeks' calendars by clicking on the "weekly calendar" category on the right. If you have questions about anything on it, please, please, PLEASE (<--all the emphasis I can muster), leave those question as comments on this blog post. I will get an alert on my phone and then promptly leave a reply. This way, the whole class can benefit from the clarification. Weekly Calendar Wednesday, September 2: In Class: Turn in Best Writing; Name Game; Syllabus; Credos HW: Free write for one full page, single spaced about what you think about writing and writing classes. No other rules, just go for it and bring it to class on Friday. Hand written or typed is fine. Friday, September 4: In Class: 4 Corners Exercise; Go over Course Website; Set Up Class Blogs HW: Sign onto class blog and introduce yourself with this short prompt, which is also Blog Post #1: How do you represent yourself on the internet? What social platforms do you use and how do you use them? How do you think you come across to your audience? Who is your audience? How is your digital persona different from your most authentic self? These questions are merely to get you thinking; you do not have to respond to them all, and please do not just answer them in the order they're asked. You should use them as a jumping off point to a compelling blog post that your peers want to read. Feel free to use cited outside sources (you can hyperlink them). Please check out "Assignments" page for more information about Weekly Blogs. Blog Post #1: Due next Friday before class time. Post this blog on your class blog with the category tags: "blog 1" "digital persona" And once more with feeling: If you have a question, post it here as a comment. It's the right thing to do. And if you see a glaring, embarrassing typo on my behalf, feel free to leave that as a comment, too. |
