ATTENDANCE POLICY:
Maintaining an active class conversation requires that as many of you be present, both physically and mentally,as possible any given day. But I realize that life happens, so you may miss three classes without penalty. For each subsequent absence, I reserve the right to reduce your grade by one-third (A to A-, A- to B+ and so on).
“Attendance” does not merely mean physical presence. You must also be mentally present, which means you must:
LATE WORK POLICY:
Unless we’ve explicitly made an arrangement, I don’t accept late class work. This includes work that is missed due to absence.
I will accept a late unessay or re-purposing assignment, but for every day late it will be counted down ⅓ a grade.
TECHNOLOGY:
For the most part, I like it. You will have ample opportunity to use your laptop, phone, or tablet in class. If you don’t have one of these, don’t worry, someone in your group will. But unless I’ve specifically mentioned the use of one of the aforementioned technology, I shouldn’t see it.
If you have an emergency and are expecting a call, you may leave your cell phone on silent and step out of class to answer (whether a text or a phone call). Please refrain from texting/playing games/looking at Facebook in class as it is distracting to you, your classmates, and myself. If you are caught using your phone in an inappropriate manner when I am talking, I will mark you absent for the day. If you are caught doing so during a time in which you are engaged in conversation with a peer, you will be asked to leave immediately (this actually happens).
COMMUNICATION:
If you need to email me, allow 2-3 days for a response. This is for a couple reasons: one, like everyone, I get A LOT of emails and if I responded to all of them right away, I would have very little time for responding to your work; two, I want you to have a firm idea of what is being asked of you for homework before you leave class, so I don’t want you relying on email as a crutch for clarification; three, when one person has a question, someone in the class can usually answer it, I recommend using the blog as a way to connect with your peers. Normally a classmate will be more than capable of answering your question, but if not, I will answer the question.

“Attendance” does not merely mean physical presence. You must also be mentally present, which means you must:
- Be awake and attentive to the conversation of the day;
- Prepare assigned texts before class begins;
- Bring your assigned texts to class. If we’re reading online articles, you should either bring a device on which to read them or print them and bring that hard copy;
- Bring your assigned texts to class!
- and, finally, bring your assigned texts to class!!!!!! I mean it. Seriously.
